Why backup matters
Škrinjar stores data locally in your browser. If you uninstall the extension or reset the browser, your data is gone. A regular backup takes 30 seconds and can save you hours of recovery.
No backup = risk of losing all passwords. The browser deletes extension storage when you uninstall. Cloud sync is not yet available.
3 export formats
Encrypted Geslar (.geslar)
Recommended. AES-256-GCM encrypted with a backup password. Only Škrinjar can open it. Safest for long-term storage.
Universal JSON
Unencrypted, human-readable. Compatible with other password managers. Delete after use — contains passwords in plain text.
CSV
Unencrypted, compatible with virtually everything (Excel, Google Sheets, other managers). Delete after use.
Creating a backup
- Open Škrinjar → Settings → Import/Export.
- Click "Export".
- Choose format (encrypted Geslar recommended).
- If encrypted: enter a backup password.
- Save the file to a safe location (USB drive, external storage).
Store backups on two separate physical locations (e.g. USB at home + USB at work). One location is a single point of failure.
Restoring from backup
- Install Škrinjar on the new browser/device.
- Create a new vault with a master password.
- Go to Settings → Import.
- Select "Geslar Backup" and choose the
.geslarfile. - Enter the backup password.
- Click "Import" — all records are restored.
Recommendations
Weekly backup
Create an encrypted backup at least once a week — more often if you add passwords frequently.
Test restores
At least once, test restoring from a backup on another device. A backup you can't restore is not a backup.
Delete unencrypted exports
CSV and JSON files contain plain-text passwords. Delete immediately after import/migration.
